Whether you’ve been trying for your first baby, trying to expand your family, or are contemplating, or are just about to start a programme of assisted fertilisation, it’s commonly recognised within mind / body research that minimising stress and anxiety is one of the best ways of preparing your body to undergo a healthy pregnancy, or to allow the best physiological conditions for healthy semen and sperm production.

A mind / body approach to fertility acknowledges the importance of working with fertility issues in a more holistic way and hypnotherapy takes into consideration the intricate link between our minds, our thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and our physical bodies.

Hypnotherapy can help to enhance fertility by:

  • Reducing stress

  • Reducing excessive worry and anxiety (regulating the autonomic nervous system)

  • Increasing feelings of self-confidence, calmness, and relaxation

  • Restoring the mind / body balance and improving overall psychological and physical wellbeing

  • Restoring hormonal balance and Immune System Function

If you haven’t started down the route of an assisted fertilisation programme and are trying to conceive naturally, hypnotherapy can help with this in a multitude of ways. Often, your GP or Fertility Team will ask you to make improvements to your general health and adjust your lifestyle in order to optimise your chances of conceiving whether naturally or via an assisted route. Hypnotherapy can also aid with:

These are all areas in which many health care professionals might recommend you begin to work on before treatment may begin. Please feel free to have a look at the relevant pages on my website to find out if hypnotherapy might help you in these areas.

Hypnotherapy is so often overlooked as a therapeutic intervention, but it can help one, or both partners in so many different ways. When trying to conceive naturally, monitoring a woman’s all important fertile window can lead to sex being planned to precision. This new focus on ‘performing’ can sometimes impact upon the intimacy within your relationship or the stress and anxiety surrounding becoming pregnant can lead to ‘performance issues’ in one, or both partners. If no medical cause for these performance issues can be found, then hypnotherapy can also be of use to you in these situations. Common sexual dysfunctions related to stress and anxiety are:

  • Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

  • Anorgasmia (in both partners, but especially problematic in the male partner)

  • Loss of sexual desire / libido.

In its basic delivery, hypnotherapy relaxes you. This in and of itself can be so beneficial. Just taking time for yourself, to relax and indulge in a little self-care can re-energise you, aid in better sleep, and boost those all-important energy levels.

Hypnotherapy also has the basic added benefit of relieving stress and anxiety. There has been a wealth of research into the effects of stress on physical health and in recent years, researchers have also begun to focus on the effect that stress has on fertility. Stress has been shown to interfere with a woman’s menstrual cycle, sometimes leading to a delay or absence of ovulation. In men, stress and anxiety have been proven to reduce sperm count and affect semen quality.

Hypnotherapy for fertility can also help to reduce the negative psychological effects that may be experienced when coming to terms with a diagnosis of fertility issues through:

  • Restoring self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth

  • Processing and releasing negative emotions that may be experienced such as guilt, anger, hopelessness, and frustration

  • Providing emotional support and the opportunity to speak openly about troubling thoughts and feelings

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) can all place both the body and the mind under a great deal of stress. In combination, any stress or anxiety experienced around fertility tests, surgical and medical interventions, and the anticipated outcome of the course of fertility treatment may result in experiencing a huge volume of often uncontrollable thoughts, feelings, and emotions which would benefit from being processed and controlled.

The hormone augmentation process, retrieval procedures, and implantation methods can all take their toll on your mood, sleep patterns, energy levels, and sometimes, on your relationship too. Maybe you are dreading the whole experience, fearful of the clinical environment you will be in, phobic of needles, or other medical-related stimuli. If you are currently preparing to begin an assisted fertilisation programme, hypnotherapy can help to:

  • Instil a positive mindset

  • Restore faith in your own body and its abilities

  • Provide emotional support when making decisions

  • Address, process, and release fears and phobias

  • Release negative feelings around the process which you and your partner (if applicable) are about to undergo

  • Reducing the effects of hormonal fertility treatments such as mood swings, irritability, and hot flushes

  • Increase your self-confidence and your ability to stay calm and focused

  • Increase your feelings of self-efficacy, elevating your ability to stay in control of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions throughout your treatment programme

There is also a wealth of evidence on the effects of stress during fertility treatment with studies showing that the effects of stress can hinder the implantation process during IVF and IUI. I am friendly, approachable, and non-judgemental and my background in nursing means that I am familiar with medical terminology and possess a greater depth of understanding surrounding the issues that you might be going through. I have been trained in a multitude of hypnotherapeutic methods which allows me to take a flexible, multi-faceted approach, allowing me to tailor your treatment programme to meet your specific needs. Hypnotherapeutic techniques which I might draw upon for fertility programmes are:

  • Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) methods

  • Cognitive Behavioural Hypnosis (CBH)

  • Dynamic imagery and visualisation

  • Emotional release techniques

  • Hypnoanalysis and / or regression – (identifying and resolving unconscious issues which may be forming a block to conception)

  • Teaching anchoring, grounding, self-hypnosis, and breathing techniques which will allow you to maintain the positive changes you have made

Hypnotherapy for fertility can usually be completed over four to six sessions depending on your presenting issue. Sometimes, deeper, investigative techniques such as regression may have to be utilised which may require a longer course of therapy. If this is the case, we will discuss this after the first few sessions as an option to enable you to get the results that you desire and deserve.

As part of your comprehensive hypnotherapeutic program, you will be given access to your personalised scripts so that you can download and listen to them between sessions to re-enforce what you are learning and to use again, whenever you need to.
