What is Pluralistic Counselling?

We may choose to seek counselling for many different reasons. Sometimes we know exactly what's troubling us; we may have experienced trauma, our relationship may have broken down, we might be under a great deal of stress at work, or our loved one may have died. However, we might not always know what has made us think, feel, or behave as we do. We may simply be aware that we are just not ourselves lately, we may feel sad, be experiencing anxiety, depression, not sleeping well, having problems relating to others, or be repeating the same patterns over and over again with no idea how it keeps happening. Whatever is bringing you to counselling at this time, I hope that you will find me to be warm, genuine, understanding, and non-judgemental from the outset.

You may have heard of the three, core counselling modalities; Person-Centred or Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Maybe you’ve tried one of these modalities in the past and felt that it didn’t quite address all of your needs?

Pluralism, essentially stems from the Humanistic paradigm of counselling. At it's core, Humanism proposes that all of us strive toward happiness, personal growth, and ultimately, self-actualisation - becoming self-aware, functioning at our optimum level of emotional and psychological health, fully recognising our potential, and becoming the best version of us that we can be. When given the space, support, and opportunity to do so, such as within a counselling environment, Humanistic psychologists Maslow and Rogers (amongst many more), propose that every one of us intrinsically knows what we need, and how to go about making those changes which will lead us toward self-actualisation.

However, the concept of Pluralism extends beyond it's Humanistic roots, as it is also based upon the belief that no one modality; whether that be Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, or CBT offers us all the answers, nor is one more effective than another. As a Pluralistic Counsellor, I take a holistic approach; placing you at the centre of your therapy, and ensuring that all approaches, interventions, and goals are collaboratively agreed upon and pursued together. As we move through our sessions, we are able to draw upon theory, skills, and interventions across all three core modalities, which means that your time within counselling can be uniquely tailored to your needs and goals as they emerge. Depending on what you want or need, and where you would like your therapy to lead, the past, present, and future may all be looked at in order for you to navigate your way toward self-awareness, healing, empowerment, and resolution.
