Hypnotherapy for Phobias

Did you know that we are only born with two intrinsic fears? The fear of loud noises and the fear of falling are naturally built into us, but all other phobias are developed throughout our lives as a result of an adverse incident, or learned from caregivers or peers.

Some phobias make sense in an evolutionary context. Being wary of snakes, spiders, and other insects is reasonable if you live in a country where these creatures might bite or sting you and cause you harm. However, for those of us that live in the UK, it's a little harder for us to understand why we become frozen with fear at the sight of a spider, snake, or insect; whether that be in real life or even on TV.

Most people have phobias; situations and things that they just can’t tolerate. This is fine, as long as these phobias don't start to interfere with our lives and the way we wish to live them. When phobias become severe and pervasive they begin to hold us back. Consciously or unconsciously we begin to actively avoid the anxiety that this fight, flight, or freeze response triggers within us, and this affects the way we are able to live our lives on a day-to-day basis. Some good examples of this include not attending routine medical or dental appointments because of a phobia of blood or needles, no longer being able to drive, or missing out on seeing the world or loved ones because we cannot envisage getting on a plane.

Hypnotherapy can be remarkably successful in reducing or eliminating many phobias including (but not limited to):

  • Dogs

  • Cats

  • Birds

  • Mice / Rats

  • Frogs / Toads

  • Driving

  • Flying

  • Heights

  • Open Water

  • Needles

  • Blood

  • Vomiting

  • Dentists

  • Hospitals

  • Crowds

  • Noises

  • Smells

  • Buttons

  • Beards

  • Dust

  • Germs

Whatever your phobia might be, if you'd like it to stop interfering with your life, hypnotherapy may be able to help through providing you with a safe, non-judgemental environment as you begin to gently face the issue that's concerning you. During each session, you will be guided into a deeply relaxed state where psychodynamic, psychoeducation, grounding, positive suggestion, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques can be applied - all designed to give you the solution-focused knowledge, insight, and practical tools you will need to empower yourself, and to tolerate or eliminate your phobia.

This course of hypnotherapy can usually be completed over four sessions depending on your presenting issue. Sometimes, clients who have developed a phobia cannot pinpoint it's cause and may require more in depth techniques such as regression to seek out it's roots. If this is the case, we will discuss this as an option after the first session.

As part of your comprehensive hypnotherapeutic program, you will be sent voice recordings of your individualised scripts so that you can listen to them at home. This allows you to re-enforce what you are learning in between sessions and provides ongoing support should you need it again in the future.
