Gastric band surgery (also known as a lap-band) has become a very popular procedure for those who wish to lose a substantial amount of weight. As with surgical gastric banding, hypno gastric banding is most suitable for those:

  • Who are over 18 years of age.

  • Who are very overweight - falling into the obese category (a Body Mass Index / BMI of > 40).

  • Who have a BMI between 30-40 and have an obesity related condition such as diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes), hypertension, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or obstructive sleep apnoea, which might improve with weight loss.

  • Who are more than seven stone in excess of their estimated ideal weight.

  • Who have tried all other methods of long-term weight loss, but have been unsuccessful.

The gastric band, whether surgically placed or 'placed' during hypnotherapy assists with weight loss by restricting your caloric intake and it does this in several ways. Firstly, because the space between the top and bottom sections of the stomach is constricted (or perceived as being restricted), the newly formed pouch now holds onto the food that has been eaten for longer which slows digestion and results in you feeling fuller for longer. Combined with this, the pressure (or perceived pressure) exerted by both the band on the outer surface of the stomach and the outward pressure exerted by the small portion of food being held within the pouch for longer period of time stimulates a feeling of satiety or fullness. This reduction in appetite occurs because hormonal messages and nerve signals between the brain and the stomach have now become altered. Your stomach tells your brain that you are full and that you don't need to eat.

Research shows that following surgical gastric banding, people generally lose around 35 - 45% of their excess weight during the first 2 - 3 years post-surgery. This comes with provisions however, as a gastric band, whether surgically placed or 'placed' under hypnotherapy will only be fully effective if the person eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly. Any type of gastric banding is not a miracle cure as weight loss is also dependent on the person's level of motivation toward a lifestyle change.

Gastric band surgery has many pros and cons. It's a surgical procedure which carries health risks, as well as benefits. The pros include:

  • Weight loss - gastric banding can help weight loss and in turn, improve health.

  • Gastric band surgery is reversible - the stomach is not permanently altered and the band can be removed if required or desired.

  • Vitamin and mineral supplements can generally be discontinued after the first year following surgery - after other types of bariatric surgery such as a gastric sleeve, dietary supplements are generally continued for life.

The cons of gastric band surgery include:

  • It's expensive - gastric banding is sometimes not available via the NHS. Privately, gastric band surgery can cost between £4000 - £8000.

  • The need for adjustments - there is no way to predict how many volume adjustments will be required. Usually, at least six adjustments are required in the first year alone.

  • Weight loss - will vary from person to person and at times may be too rapid or too slow.

  • Band slippage - if the band should slip, it will become ineffective and will require further surgery to secure it once more.

  • Band leakage - if the band should leak, it will again become ineffective and will require removal and replacement via further surgery.

  • Gastric band erosion -  rarely, the band can migrate or grow into the stomach. In this case, the band will have to be removed, requiring further surgery.

  • Adhesions - internal scarring which can cause the organs of the body to become stuck to one another.

  • Discomfort - bruising, pain, or swelling may occur around incision or port sites.

  • Anaesthetic / Surgical Complications - weight-related conditions such as diabetes and hypertension can increase the risks of surgery and post-surgical complications.

  • Blood clots - the risks of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary emboli (PE) are enhanced both during and after any surgical procedure.

  • Infection - may arise around the incision sites, around the band, in the injection port and tube, or systemically (affecting the whole body).

  • Pain - analgesia is often required post-surgery.

  • Bleeding - any incision made into the body carries the risk of blood loss.

  • Allergy - there may be a very small risk that the individual will be allergic to the materials that the gastric band is comprised of.

  • Time in hospital / clinic - some people will require an overnight stay (or longer) post-surgery.

  • Recovery period - it can take up to 2 weeks to recover fully from gastric band surgery.

So, what if you could get the benefits of a gastric band without all of the risks? Hypno gastric banding can mimic all of the effects of surgical gastric banding without the possible risks and complications and the huge financial cost.

Hypno gastric banding consists of around 6.5 hours of hypnotherapy, provided over the course of 4 weeks. During weeks 1 and 2, an in-depth treatment programme will be devised and delivered to you. Under hypnosis, you and your unconscious mind will be encouraged to reduce your appetite, to engage in healthy eating habits, and to be more motivated to take moderate exercise that's enjoyable for you. On week 3, you will have your hypno gastric banding procedure. During this session, your unconscious mind will be encouraged to take on the suggestions that you have had a real gastric band fitted, that a small pouch has been created, that you feel fuller, quicker, and that your appetite has been reduced further. All of these suggestions encourage you to lose weight in the same way you would if you'd had a real gastric band fitted. After 2 weeks, you will then receive session 4, during which time your band will be adjusted according to your preferences. Maybe you've lost weight quickly or maybe the band requires tightening further? Whichever instance occurs, your band can be adjusted so that you get the maximum benefits possible.

As with surgical banding, hypno-banding will only be effective if you follow instructions provided to you regarding portion size, liquids, and healthy eating both pre and post-procedure. Post-procedure you'll be encouraged to drink 1.5 - 2 litres of fluid per day, spaced out between meals, drinking between 100 - 200ml at a time. I'll be totally upfront in saying that you may find the first few weeks post your hypno gastric banding a little strange. You are advised to consume five to six tablespoons of liquid or pureed food, five to six times per day, for the first two to four weeks whilst you adjust to your new band, but the aim is to have your unconscious mind totally prepared to work with you throughout to make the whole lifestyle change easier for you.

Alongside your hypnotherapeutic treatment program, you will be provided with an in-depth weight loss questionnaire, weekly handouts including your pre and post-banding nutrition recommendations, voice recordings of your individualised scripts at various stages, and the opportunity to weigh in before each session if you would like to.

Hypno gastric banding is provided as a package consisting of 4 sessions, but if you feel that you would like to work further on other common issues relating to weight loss such as self-confidence, self-esteem, self-belief, motivation, healthy eating, or increasing your desire to exercise, an 8 session package comprising of weight management and hypno gastric banding is also available. This option is intended for those clients who's relationship with food goes a little deeper, those who may have a stressful lifestyle that may make it harder for them to adhere to the hypno gastric band program, or those who need a bit more help with eating healthily and moving more. This 8 session package aims to equip you fully with the tools you'll need to lose weight and keep it off for good.

Gastric band hypnotherapy isn't for everyone and it is not successful for everyone. The most successful clients are those that truly want to change their weight, eating habits and food relationships. Any lifestyle change requires that you apply yourself fully to your goal and are ready, both in your heart and in your head, to lose weight. Hypnotic suggestion works best with those with the right mindset, although that shouldn’t imply that gastric band hypnotherapy wouldn’t work for you. Every client is see is measured on their own merits for suitability and I would not advocate hypno gastric banding for you if I feel that you would be unsuitable.
