Health, Chronic Disease, and Pain Management: Image

The mind-body connection is real and it is powerful. So much of modern society’s time is taken up focusing on the causes of physical conditions, that we forget how powerful an impact having a healthy mind can have on our overall wellbeing too.

Stress and anxiety impact heavily on our health and wellbeing and research has shown that chronic stress has such a significant effect on the immune system, that it may ultimately manifest as a physical illness. Indeed, stress and anxiety are considered to be prominent risk factors for many acute and chronic medical conditions that people may develop over the course of their lives.

In line with stress and anxiety producing physical illness, the conditions can also give rise to somatic sensations of pain, or exacerbate pain in those who are living with a chronic health condition.

One of the first applied uses of hypnosis within a health care setting was as a sole anaesthetic agent during major surgery undertaken by an English doctor whilst he was working in India in the 1800’s. Since then, the evidence for its efficacy in pain relief has become overwhelming. Pain is an emotion, a construct of the mind, it is debilitating, feared by all, and a completely subjective experience for those who must live with it's sensations.

Hypnotherapy can help with pain-related conditions including (but not limited to):

  • Chronic Headaches

  • Migraines

  • Arthritis

  • Phantom Limb Pain

  • Polymyalgia

  • Cancer and it's various treatments

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Long-COVID

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS / ME)

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Hypnotherapy can also assist with iatrogenic pain in those undergoing or about to undergo:

  • Physiotherapy

  • Dental work

  • Assisted fertility programmes

  • Surgery

  • Medical Investigations / tests

Hypnotherapy can help to give you a sense of control over your pain and help to diminish the fear of pain, which often exacerbates the sensations of pain and reduces tolerance to it. Hypnotherapy can help you to feel an increased sense of self-efficacy which enables you to make a difference to your experiences of pain.

Often, we take our health for granted forgetting that feeling healthy and being able to function well from day to day is one of the most important things in life. Sometimes our medical conditions and illnesses are caused by physiological impacts such as our bodies being attacked by pathogens, allergens, or by a deterioration or malfunction of our internal systems. Sometimes, our minds are capable of manifesting or exacerbating these physical symptoms and these functional or somatic conditions can also impact on our physiological state, our health, and our wellbeing.

When we feel unwell, we seek advice from a medical professional who will carry out tests and hopefully offer us a diagnosis. We are then offered a solution, often in the form of medication that may benefit us, leave us dealing with their side-effects, or in the worst case, have no effect at all. Sometimes we are told that there is no reason behind our illness, our tests are all clear, yet we still experience symptoms and this can be a huge source of worry and frustration. Left feeling confused and unsupported, people may spiral lower into feelings of helplessness and hopelessness with depression being a common outcome.

Our bodies have a remarkable ability to heal themselves. They repair damaged tissue, generate new cells, and correct new errors in our genetic coding on a daily basis. They release hormones, endogenous pain killers such as endorphins, and feel-good neurotransmitters such as serotonin to lift our mood. The mind can also play a healing role within our bodies and contemporary medical research voraciously focuses on this mind-body link within health and disease and the ways in which it can be utilised to help those living with many chronic health conditions.

Conditions that can be helped with the use of hypnotherapy include (but are not limited to):

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Asthma

  • Eczema

  • Dermatitis

  • Psoriasis

  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

  • Bladder issues and continence

  • Tension headaches

  • Migraines

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sciatica

  • Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

  • The side effects and emotional turmoil of Cancer treatments

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Long-COVID

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS / ME)

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Whether your condition is physiological, functional, or a mixture of both, hypnotherapy can help with many medical issues that are traditionally thought of as being solely physical in their origin. It is a positive therapy, highly focused on relaxation, how to induce a positive mind set and how to release stress and tension. These strategies offer a myriad of beneficial effects and underpin all hypnotherapeutic treatment programmes for health and chronic disease management. At times, searching for the origins of your symptoms may also be beneficial in your healing journey. Hypnotherapy can help you to feel more in control, increase your sense of self-efficacy, and allow you to learn to self-hypnotise so that you can use this skill whenever you need some relief. You will understand the mind- body link, explore the messages behind your pain, be taught how to completely relax, and taught pain management techniques that are right for you, enabling you to control it, for the rest of your life. Hypnotherapy can also assist you to discover how you can use coping strategies to assist you in the control of any other physical or psychological symptoms that are related to your condition, putting you firmly back in control of your health and wellbeing.
